Rilles

Wild Awake third drop artist - Rilles

Rilles’ brand of electronic music fits into many different genres. It incorporates elements of lo-fi and makes use of analogue equipment to be decidedly left-of-centre. This music brings us back to the beginning of this millennium, or even the end of the previous one. The sounds of trip hop shimmer through the sounds Rilles creates. What happens, as a listener, is that Rilles’ music takes you into their world, but then you’ll displace that with your own ideas and thoughts as the music takes you centre stage. For the keen listener, there’s always interesting time signatures to figure out in Rilles’ music, which can be heard as an expression of the way the music always finds a work to resonate.

In their own words: music production

“I work kind of one track at a time, putting in some drum track and then the bass. Or maybe I'll start with some chords or sort of background pad type, fun synth stuff and then build it up from there. I would say if I don't have a song in mind, but going more off an experimental ideation type process, then I'll probably start with a synth or I work a lot with cassette tapes. So like a tape loop. I crack open these tapes and then make little five second loops and record stuff into my cassette tape recorder, whether that's a synthesizer, a guitar or something and then use that as a building block.”

In their own words: why Wild Awake

“I think that I started exploring Web3 because I just had a general interest in the evolution of distribution channels of art. Sounds overly kind of complicated, but I think I was just interested in the idea that there was maybe sort of a different way to release and distribute your work and connect with people. Then Wild Awake appeals to me in wanting to bring people together to put energy towards creating this online music community scene, label, involving Web3. Like, all of that is just really right up my alley.”

Listen now - Mad World (cover)

The track that Rilles will release during Wild Awake isn’t out yet, but they did recently release a beautiful cover of Mad World by Tears for Fears that will haunt you.
