Life and work

Ruy Belo Nascimento was born in 1933 and died in Lisbon in 1978. Poet and essayist, born in São João da Ribeira, Rio Maior, graduated in Romance Philology and Law from the University of Lisbon, obtained a doctorate in Canon Law from the Gregorian University of Rome, with a thesis entitled Literary Fiction and Ecclesiastical Censorship. He held, albeit for a short time, the position of deputy director at the then Ministry of National Education, but his relationship with opponents of the regime at the time, his participation in the 1962 academic strike and his candidacy for deputy, in 1969, for lists of the Democratic Unity Electoral Commission (CEUD), led to its activities being monitored and conditioned.

He also held a post as reader of Portuguese at the University of Madrid (1971-1977). After returning to Portugal, he was refused the opportunity to teach at the Faculty of Arts in Lisbon, teaching at the Escola Técnica do Cacém, at night. He would die a year later, at the age of 45.
