One of the earliest known civilizations in the region was the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished around 2500 BCE. Although the majority of this civilization was centered in present-day Pakistan and northwestern India, its influence extended to parts of present-day Bangladesh.

In the classical period, the Bengal region, which encompasses present-day Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, witnessed the rise and fall of various powerful empires and kingdoms. The Maurya Empire, led by Emperor Ashoka, extended its rule over Bengal in the 3rd century BCE. The Gupta Empire, known for its cultural and intellectual achievements, also exerted its influence over the region.

During the medieval period, Bengal became a significant center of trade and learning. The Pala Dynasty, which ruled over Bengal from the 8th to the 12th century CE, was known for its patronage of Buddhism and the development of art, literature, and education.

In the 13th century, Muslim rulers began to establish their dominance in the region. Bengal witnessed the arrival of various Muslim dynasties, including the Delhi Sultanate and the Bengal Sultanate. The Bengal Sultanate, which was established in 1352, experienced a period of prosperity and cultural advancement under rulers like Alauddin Hussain Shah and Raja Ganesha.
