Epic Beer Run to fwb fest 2023

Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to fetch 30 cases of beer, 1,200 miles away, and bring them to a pool party.

My 14 year old son accepted.

We rented an SUV and made campsite reservations; the Epic Beer Run across the Wild West would begin in the morning!

First stop was the Red Cliffs Campground, outside of St George Utah, which was a pleasant surprise after hours and hours crossing the Mojave.

Someone was already pitching their tent at campsite #11; it was the only empty spot. I had reserved it the day before, but since we were in the middle of the desert, with almost zero accommodation options nearby, I invited them to share the space.

We talked around the campfire.

Hurray for waking up in a tent! But no lingering this morning; we needed to cross the entire state of Utah and some of Colorado. Don’t worry, the average highway speed limit in Utah is 80 mph!

When we made it to the base of the Rockies, Sam and Colleen Kuhlmann let two dirty campers into their home (which has a porch swing!!!) for tacos - thank you Sam and Colleen 💖

After leaving our riverside campsite at sunrise, we snagged an amazing spot at Echo Lake, in the Colorado Rockies. We pitched the tent, unloaded the SUV into the box that locked out bears, and headed down into Denver.

Raid Brood kept the beer at a warehouse near downtown. We found the address and the pass-code to the lock on the door worked! 30 cases of beer went into the SUV.

Yes, we probably could’ve fit more beer, volume wise, but the weight maxed out the suspension, at least for another 1,200 miles across the Wild West.

Loaded with beer and restocked on groceries, we returned to our beautiful campsite. After two days of driving, one that included loading cases of beer, all we would do the next day was camping stuff. Which meant that I should have a beer.

Or two.

There was also hiking, with vistas and wishes.

You know it's been a good time when you can’t get the dirt out from under your fingernails!

Pack camping stuff into a vehicle, already mostly full of beer? Done!

Idaho Springs has excellent breakfast, especially since I accidentally dropped much the previous night’s dinner into the fire, when we escaped from the rain.

Down the mountain, the temperature was flirting with 100 degrees fahrenheit, so we decided to keep going.

In the car, my son played 90’s metal to keep me in good spirits for 8+ hours of driving. He makes me so proud!

We ate dinner at a diner that reminded me of the beginning of Pulp Fiction, with wide booths against big windows.

The next morning we were back at the beautiful Red Canyon Campground. It was just in time for the first DAO Pals Token Engineering Fundamentals Study group, which I’m facilitating, not because I know token engineering, but because I want to be held accountable to learn it.

The beer made it to my desk and then to the walk-in refrigerator at Idyllwild Arts School, a whole day before fwb fest started!

To begin the weekend, I met Will Papper for crepes in Temecula, California. (Yes, the Wild West can make crepes. It’s not just BBQ.)

Side note: Will once rescued my son and me from getting kicked out of a bar. Apparently it switches to 21 and older after happy hour. So, Will walked us over to the DAOStar house, where Josh Tan was, not surprisingly, being an incredibly graceful dinner host! Jessica Zartler was there too 💖

While Cabin was facilitating workshops at fwb fest, Raid Brood member Matt brought a couple cases of beer over to Neighborhood Zero, the original Cabin in the Texas hill country.

We need to find more ways to supper with Cabin!

But…

Are you curious about the final destination for the beer run?!?

Creatives from Los Angeles and beyond, who are curious about how Web3 can support their art, claimed NFTs, from QR codes on beer cans that were brewed by a DAO.

But mostly it was about the fwb fest pool party.

Thank you fwb - hope we can fest again sometime!
