Economies of Sound: Data Indexing, DApp Builders and Smart Contract Specialists

These are not exhaustive reviews but surface level findings of what is currently available, what can be added to, built upon or more deeply researched. Each comes with its own niche of expertise. If you “don’t get it” just yet, that’s ok! Start getting familiar so you know what to keep on your radar and learn at your own speed.

REVIEW

We laid some groundwork into the realms of possibilities for music streaming tools in web3 in my previous review and updated a feature wishlist I’ve started for: a customizable UX/UI design, self-curated, choose your own adventure environment/ecosystem/DApp with access to large database of music to stream.

Through this process of research, observation, beta testing, auditing, watching and listening I am gaining a much better understanding of the protocols that currently exist, what is being built now and how they can come together to support these ideas. This post is more about the underlying frameworks for data: aggregation, querying and curating as well as DApp builders and what will no doubt be in higher demand: the smart contract specialist.

Pieces of the Puzzle…

Each of the below topics offer their own stream of associated vocabulary which will help to understand the language. What each word, name, brand etc is referring to points to a particular aspect of the blockchain that the technology is relevant for. Each of these resources are multi-purpose and “interoperable.”

Again, these posts are my personal journey through exploring and researching web3 so that I can learn how to articulate my own desires features, outcomes, structures to developers and engineers and what to look for and look out for when working in various aspects of the blockchain. I am learning right along with you!

As with all things in #web3 it is highly suggested and advised to do your due diligence of research around all of these topics from reputable resources. It is still very early in whatever is going to be developed here. Those with the luxury of time to do this research will be greatly needed by those who don’t moving forward. At this point we are putting in the time and energy to help remove burdens and barriers to entry to encourage inclusivity and simplify onboarding for the future. (And why it is of THE greatest importance for womxn, non-gender identifying peeps, underrepresented communities, creative minds, lawyers, civil engineers, developers and more to get in the web3 mix while we build together).

Constellating…

A utilitarian overview to start aligning stars, connecting various dots for how the constellations of sound that are now being created as NFT collections or catalogues on the blockchain could become available for streaming and where to start…

The below resources could allow us to…

1.) Search, find and stream NFT music + any other music that has been uploaded to the blockchain

2.) Build simple, customizable DApps (Decentralized Applications)

3.) Set up smart contracts in our best interest as artists for deploying to blockchain for automated streaming payouts, agreements etc. *Smart contracts are also necessary in setting up DAO governance so knowing how and what should be written into the contract before deploying is important.

Data Indexing + Curating

The Question: How do we index the decentralized uploads for audio projects to the blockchain to be searched in our various interfaces for easy listening on our various devices?

These two indexing protocols might be a great place to start…

The Graph

“An open network producing the fastest, cheapest, most reliable way to access data for the crypto economy. For the first time it will be possible to efficiently query blockchain data without relying on a centralized service provider…”

https://thegraph.com/en/

Ceramic Network

“On Ceramic, all data is published to the open web where it's easy to share streams between different organizations and applications without centralized servers or APIs, link multiple streams together to form a graph of relationships, or fork and remix existing streams into entirely new creations….”

Easy to use UX environment/app builders…

The question: What is available in the current landscape for code-less self-building apps that are an easy option for non-developers like me (ie: drag and drop features)?

Most of these builders (if not all) seem to be for “developers and businesses” so I feel a unique opportunity is in the “personal development ;)” space. Where we can just create our own app to consolidate, centralize and curate our own music preferences and audio NFT collections.

Seems we all might be developing our way into no-code self-developers…

BUNZZ

A DApp development platform…

“Bunzz - The platform allows users to complete the entire process from DApp configuration to deployment using only a graphical user interface (GUI), thus greatly reducing the cost of learning blockchain and smart contracts that make up DApp…”

SMART CONTRACT SPECIALISTS

The question: Who specializes in writing smart contracts? Who should I be consulting with before deploying a smart contract? What should I be looking for or taking into consideration when writing/reading a smart contract?

This one is definitely nuance. Smart contracts are important on a variety of levels from NFT tracking to automated royalty pay outs for music streaming especially. When I first started asking about smart contracts to various #web3 peeps most would say “anyone can write a smart contract.” Yes, sure, ok, “anyone” can but can they actually write it “smartly.” As with all contracts and negotiations, your end of the bargain is only as safe and secure as the deals you included within those contracts. I highly suggest reading the below article to further understand what a smart contract is and does. “A security mindset is essential for smart contract developers…”

MONEGRAPH

Monegraph has been around since 2014, providing tools to make digital assets successful for creators and their communities. It seems they have in-house team that likely specializes in smart contracts for creatives…

SUMMARY

Synapsis are firing. Brain is definitely getting bigger from all of this information. Sorting through the web3 wonderland we are finding ourselves in and I hope this gives a bit more of a practical approach to how to build your own curated and customizable marketplaces and DApps for music streaming. I hope this also offered some insight to better understanding how everything that is being developed in web3 can work together in a modular and customizable way through composability and interoperability and I pray these resources encourage you to pay attention to how to draft the wisest of smart contracts with you and your communities best interest at heart.

Through this process I am starting to refine my knowledge of what is possible, noticing what lacks substance/viability and what is important to me technologically, contractually and ethically. These posts are helping to organize my thoughts on the matter and allows a “frame of reference” for various avenues of innovation, hybridization and collaboration between web2 and web3 in the development of music streaming.
