The adoption of the digital economy in Colombia through cryptocurrencies and blockchain.

The blockchain industry is a new, unregulated area. A huge ecosystem is born and developed before our very eyes, and everyone can contribute to its development. Now governments often decide first to ban everything, and then, perhaps, gradually to resolve, and this is normal.

In the age of crypto, all the digital ecosystems we know today will be built on the blockchain and facilitated by cryptocurrencies, leading to new developments such as uncensorable content and more inclusive payment services.

The cryptoindustry is developing at a rapid pace. Here are the main development directions: block and smart contracts, scavenging and atomic processing, robotization, Internet of things, virtual and augmented reality. Implementing this new vision of the internet can bring great benefits to Colombia in industries such as education, health, banking, financial services, telecommunications, governments, media, cybersecurity, logistics, maritime, finance, food, etc.

Colombia advances in the implementation of blockchain to combat corruption

The TIC Ministry created a memorandum of understanding to develop proofs of concepts and pilot developments based on this technology.

Digitization and globalization have generated new challenges that have made it necessary to increase security and develop new tools to protect information.

Aura Cifuentes, director of Digital Government of the TIC Ministry, recalled at the Blockchain Summit Global 2021 that, from August 17 to November 30, 2021, a pilot with this technology is being carried out in Colombia that would allow it to face the corruption.

"The use of this technology gives us the possibility of reinforcing access to public information and the use of open data by having distributed databases, it also generates traceability of management and documents from the origin, prevents manipulation , guarantees transparency in the processes and prevents information leakage and improper data handling", Cifuentes assured.

The National Land Agency participates in this first phase of the project, whose challenge is to implement a solution that will ensure the traceability and management of the encrypted storage of the documentation and supports of the property adjudication process; also the Agricultural Rural Planning Unit, which needs a solution to trace and monitor the prices of panela in each of the links (agents) of commercialization at the national level.

The third entity is the Superintendence of Notaries and Registry, which identified the impact of the implementation of Blockchain on the authenticity, reliability, integrity, usability and interoperability of both notarized and registry documents.

Faced with this, Karen Abudinen, Minister of TIC, assured: "The step towards digital is not just about digitizing information and processes, mechanisms must also be structured that guarantee the security of information for all Colombians. Therefore, we want to encourage the use of Blockchain in entities, to get the most out of this technology and modernize it".

During his participation, Cifuentes also recalled: "Today (Friday, September 3) the call for other entities that would like to implement Blockchain pilots was closed, and we hope that those registered will send us the technical sheet of the project until September 10th to continue with the selection process and formally enter the pilot".

In addition, the TIC Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with the BID LAB, Grupo Sabra - Extrimiam and Peersyst to develop proofs of concepts and pilot developments. With this, it seeks to promote the exchange of theoretical and technical information for the execution of Blockchain projects. Likewise, joint actions will be carried out to validate, iterate and test Blockchain solutions for public projects.

Now technology is born in our country

In a world that is advancing by leaps and bounds, going slow is going backwards, and that is precisely what has happened to our country. We cannot ignore the advances in the penetration and use of the Internet that have been made, however, when comparing ourselves with the dynamics of economies similar to ours, it is clear that we are lagging behind.

Some characteristics that define Colombia as a country that is at the level to develop projects based on blockchain:

  • Digital adoption tends to increase in the country. Probably, as we have seen happening around the world, the Covid-19 crisis will have the effect of accelerating digital adoption processes, especially in the countries that face the greatest challenges in this regard.
  • Local talent has taken a leap in quality: In other words, to find the profiles that are at the forefront of technology and data matters, you don't have to invest a fortune to seduce some Silicon Valley rockstar or some silent genius. in Estonia. Those people are likely to be in Colombia or in other countries in the region such as Mexico and Brazil.
  • Public purchases in order to improve three aspects: transparency, impartiality and control over selection processes.

There are opportunities

The MinTic has just launched TecDigital, a public project to help companies improve their productivity and open new markets through technology. The goal of the program is to benefit at least a thousand companies this year, through an investment of 2,745 million pesos.

TecDigital is a center for advanced technological services, oriented towards digital transformation. The platform makes it possible to measure the level of technological maturity of each organization and helps it make the leap to technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, the Internet of Things and Blockchain, among others, with which notable comparative advantages are obtained.

During the last 18 months we have seen that in technology there is an important growth opportunity for the country. It is not just a party for the big global technology companies, but the Colombian IT sector can play a prominent role.

Apply blockchain technology in Colombia

Most recent studies agree that digital infrastructure gaps and challenges for small and medium-sized businesses to adopt the latest technologies are the main barriers to growth in the digital economy.

Blockchain is a revolutionary technology and although the process of its adoption and implementation is not easy, the governments of different countries realize the importance of disengagement. Blockchain is needed in the financial sector, business management, to protect data and decentralized autonomous bodies. Blockchain will help the notary to be convinced of the reliability of the diploma or certificate, the emerald suppliers to protect themselves from counterfeits, and the Colombian government to hold transparent and fair elections.

Ahmed bin Sulayem and Iván Duque Márquez addressed a senior delegation of Colombian ministers and 50 Colombian business leaders, to discuss advancing bilateral trade between Dubai and Colombia. “There is a real opportunity to work together in the crypto and blockchain space, with the DMCC Crypto Centre being the perfect launch pad for innovative Colombian enterprises seeking global expansion,” added Sulayem.
