8.0 The MIND and humans as psychological beings

In this chapter, we will introduce the concept of humans as psychological beings. We will provide an overview of general concepts related to the human psyche. For more specific information on the human mind, please refer to chapter 9 of the curriculum.

1. Understanding Your Mindset: Fixed vs. Growth

  • Humanistic and existential: our own choice and free will determine our actions. Let the human be.

  • Sociocultural: social and cultural factors determine our actions. How do humans behave in groups?

  • Postmodernism: more spiritual, less scientific approach. Puts its emphasis on the individual. Can the human transcend its being?

  • The biopsychosocial model: a mix of the above. I recognize myself most in this category.

Not that you would have to act on those, but ignore them and they become stronger over time (start yelling louder to be heard). Hear them, feel them and decide to act or not.

By bringing our unconscious thoughts and feelings into the light of consciousness, we can gain insight into our own strengths and weaknesses, and we can make more informed and deliberate choices about how we want to act and interact with others. This can be a difficult process, but it can also be very rewarding and can lead to greater self-awareness and personal growth. So better to shine a light on them, to recognize your strengths and weaknesses. Ignoring and not understanding your inner stories and drives can create a lot of limitations and wrong paths. Nothing to be afraid of; just like your arm or leg, it is a part of you. They are there for a reason. If you don’t know your primal fears and desires, there is a big chance they are driving your everyday actions.

5. Dealing with Negative Thoughts: Strategies and Techniques

We have an incredible amount of negative (often semi-subconscious) thoughts and programming, our inner conversation stems from our primal ancestors and is attached to danger or hunting. The negativity bias stems from your primal mind (limbic system). You can learn to bend these negative thoughts by observing your thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. First, you will have to work with your unconscious, with the often sabotaging beliefs anchored in it. There are numerous effective methods, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Other techniques that may be helpful include mindfulness meditation, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and positive affirmations. It's important to remember that it can take time and effort to change negative thought patterns, but with practice and persistence, it is possible to make progress.
