how do i weigh myself?

how do we, as musicians, weigh our work? the number of streams we have? how many impressions each social media post gets? how many followers we have emblazoned at the top of our Spotify profiles?

what if we’ve been stockholm-syndromed?

working towards the wrong notion of success; stuck in groundhog day each release trying to appease the algorithms and left disappointed when the algorithmic overlords don’t propel us into a well-followed playlist.

and, even then, we struggle to translate those streams and new listeners into lasting relationships. many of my musical friends have been playlisted, racking up hundreds of thousands of streams and listeners, however have seen no increase in real fans from it and lesser so in the form of monetary reward.

i thought about this deeply the past couple of days. music for me is about connection, shared moments, shared feelings. I get g i d d y whenever someone tells me how my music has made them feel, a time it’s taken them back to, the memories it conjures up for them.

and how do we go back to that? break out of chasing the algorithmic-shaped dragon and instead, finding legitimate human connection through our art?

well here you join me at the beginning of my journey; i guess we’ll find out…

keep up to date with my steps, trials and tribulations on twitter, facebook or instagram ✨✨
