Since 2020, We’ve been hearing so much about Decentralisation, Web3, NFT. Developers adapt to new changes swiftly and we designers can’t miss this.
So, What’s Web3?
To explain this as simply as possible, I take design inspiration & marketplace websites as an example.
Web 1
Design is Kinky is a website started around 2000 and was owned by Andrew Johnstone. He decided to create a website to post about web designers and their websites whose works he enjoyed a lot. Over time, there is much traffic and the site become popular but they can only navigate through and read all the posts. Users can only join the mailing lists.
Web 2
Then After 2009, Dribbble, Envato launched. Dribbble became a place to build a profile, portfolio for their careers, and Envato became a marketplace for designers to sell their works for a price.
Web 3 & NFT
Before going into this, Look at how my fellow designers reacted to my post around Feb’21. Not blaming them, I was also not confident at that time, this creative economy boom will work, but actually, It did.
Now 2021, You just have to connect your Crypto wallets to the websites like opensea, foundation(Invite needed). Mint your NFT, You will be a creator and someone might buy your work if they like or even if they don’t. They just want to own a good piece of art. This piece of NFT sold for 444 ETH.

Why Web3?
In these examples, Common between Web2.0 and Web 3.0 is payments. In Web2.0, You have to share information with a website for payment. But In Web 3.0, You will be able to trade Information & work with your buyers you don’t know or yet explicitly trust, without an intermediary. Simply avoiding Middlemen for designers to sell their products.
What’s in it for Product Designers?
Let’s talk about Pros first, Users don’t have to experience the following flawed user flows:
- Signups with Long forms
- Email/Phone Verification
- Payments with Multiple Authentications
- Spam/Remainder Emails
Click Connect wallet - Approve in the wallet - Logged in
Cons: I’m afraid We can’t define the Target audience, can’t do Data-Driven Design & A/B Testing. Which are most important for UX, Product Designers.
What’s in it for Graphic, Video Designers?
Really, Creative economy is booming. NFT’s our future. You can earn with your passion. This Cat GIF Sold for 300 ETH. What do you want more than this?
