Building Community-Driven Canons: The Proposals

JPG Canons are crowdsourced lists of NFTs, so the key to the success of JPG Canons lies in the active participation of our community.

That said, lately we’ve seen a range of people stepping forward to propose the creation of new Canons, which is heartening because it shows that folks are interested in these onchain lists as cultural infrastructure.

These proposals are also a reminder that 1) we need new Canons to be formed to better track the different cultural movements around NFTs, and that 2) we’d love to invite others to feel inspired and join us in proposing and discussing more Canons.

Accordingly, to demonstrate what our community has been up to here and to offer some inspiration for your own ideas going forward, here are some of the latest Canon proposals we’ve seen in recent days!

Live Pixels

pixlpa has proposed Live Pixels, a Canon of NFTs that are foundationally based upon live-rendered processes in their display. Time-based artworks with ongoing rendering like Kim Asendorf’s SABOTAGE would be a fit for this list.

AI Art

Eileen Skyers proposed the creation of an AI Art Canon on the heels of recent AI discussions in the JPG Discord, plus the “recent debate over Claire Silver and now this article about Mat Dryhurst and Holly Herndon’s recent endeavors.”

Physical / Digital

Joshyzen proposed a Physical / Digital Canon for tracking NFT projects that “have a physical element to them,” such as The Currency by Damien Hirst.

dEaD

David Lisser proposed the dEaD Canon, a curated list of art NFTs that incorporate the burning of tokens or the degradation of image/file as an essential part of the artwork.

Historical NFTs (and more)

Chainleft, an acclaimed NFT historian, recently proposed a Historical NFTs Canon as well as a range of other potential options, e.g. a Fully Onchain Canon, a Runtime Art Canon, and beyond.

Help us shape the Canons!

The recent Canon proposals from the JPG community showcase the diversity of interests and the creative potential that lies within the NFT space. They also emphasize the need for active community participation to create and curate these culturally valuable NFT lists.

Which of these Canon proposals resonate with you the most? Or do you have a unique Canon idea or multiple that you'd like to personally propose? We invite you to join the JPG Discord and share your thoughts and suggestions.

Together, we can continue to expand and refine the Canons as cultural infrastructure, shaping the future of NFT curation and discovery in the process. And who knows, your Canon idea might just be the next one to inspire our community and come to life!
