killer - Sara Phillips

Don’t let the soothing, angelic tone of Sara Phillips’ voice fool you, she’s a killer when it comes to putting an end to the rumor mill.

‘“killer” is about when you’re falsely made out to be the ‘bad guy’ in a situation,” says Sara. “It’s about people who change the narrative of what happened between you and them. I think this happens a lot in relationships–whether romantic or platonic.”

Her tightly executed, self-directed music video illustrates the captivating combination of her distinct creative direction, effortless vocals, thoughtful songwriting and measured production style. The video opens with Sara standing in the kitchen dancing with a chef’s knife in a sundress and red apron appearing grounded, radiant, and calm. The ghost of her ex lover is introduced, represented by an inflatable doll with whom she’s playing out the relationship – cuddling on the couch, taking photos on vacation, and sharing a heart-shaped cake.

“When I first wrote the record I immediately saw what I wanted the video to look like. I knew I wanted to be a ‘killer’ in the video and liked the idea of having a blow-up doll represent an apathetic partner. I directed and shot the video myself, which was a challenge but really fun,” she adds.

As the song describes the relationship going sour, Sara deflates the doll to illustrate taking her power back after being scapegoated by an ex lover. Setting the record straight, she sings: “My hands are clean, But you just need someone to blame I get it, Just wish you’d be someone, I didn’t have to keep regretting.”

The final frame shows her on the couch, back with the doll–a poignant illustration of how difficult it can be to move on, even when there’s bad blood.
